On June 2nd, 1971, Panathinaikos reaches, under the brilliant management of the "galloping major" Ferenc Puskas, the final of the Champions Cup in Wembley against Ajax.
The Dutch win by 2-0, but the achievement of Panathinaikos is unique and most certainly the leading moment of Greek football in club level.

In December 1971, Panathinaikos represented Europe in the Intercontinental Cup against Southern American champion, Nacional de Montevideo. |
In the 1984-85 season, Panathinaikos reaches the European Champions Cup Semi-final. There he is eliminated by the almighty Liverpool. |

In the 1987 – 88 season, the "greens" made it to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup, eliminating the almighty Juventus, the French Auxerre and the Hungarian Honvent. |
In the 1991-92 season, the "shamrock" was “present” in the first experimental format of the Champions League and advanced to the final eight. |
In the 1995-1996 season, Panathinaikos reached the Champions League Semi-final, where he faced Ajax, achieving a historical victory in the last matchup in the Olympic Stadium of Amsterdam by the score of 1-0. The second leg was played in Athens and had an unfortunate outcome for Panathinaikos but the "triumph of Amsterdam" is among the highlights of the club/s history |
In the 2001-2002 season, Panathinaikos reached the Champions League Quarterfinal, realising another impressive journey passing through two group stages in order to reach the “8” of the competition where he was eliminated in a thriller match against Barcelona in Spain.
The greens prevailed 1-0 in the first leg and fought elegantly in the second game, only to be disqualified due to some spectacular saves by the Spanish defense and a narrowly-missed shot in the dying seconds
