Panathinaikos celebrated their second consecutive win in the league, overcoming Atromitos 1–0 at an empty Leoforos Stadium for Matchday 6 of the Super League. Under the heavy shadow of the loss of George Baldock, who tragically passed away a year ago, the Greens paid tribute to his memory.
Before the kickoff, a minute of silence was observed, while in the stands of “Apostolos Nikolaidis” a banner with George’s image reminded everyone that he will never be forgotten — he will always be with us, in our thoughts, in our hearts, and in our souls. On the field as well, the Shamrock players did their duty with a victory dedicated to George’s memory — a small tribute to a beloved member of the Panathinaikos family who left us too soon.
In terms of the match, Panathinaikos started energetically, pressing Atromitos high. Their first threat came in the 9th minute through Bakasetas, after a through ball from Chirivella, but Houtesiotis blocked. In the 19th minute, the Atromitos goalkeeper again made a crucial save, denying the captain’s low shot after a fine combination between Kyriakopoulos and Swiderski.
At the 28th minute, it was Swiderski’s turn to threaten with a header from Touba’s cross, but the ball went just wide of the left post. In the 31st minute, Renato Sanches tried his luck from outside the box, but Houtesiotis dived to his right to save. The first half ended goalless, with Panathinaikos missing one more chance in the 45th minute when Kyriakopoulos broke into the box and shot from a tight angle, only for Houtesiotis to push it away for a corner.
The Greens started the second half as they ended the first, with another good chance from Swiderski, whose shot was parried by Houtesiotis. The goal finally came in the 48th minute. Bakasetas took a corner, Čerin rose above everyone, and his header found the net for 1–0. The players immediately dedicated the goal to George Baldock, lifting his jersey high in the air.
Panathinaikos kept pushing for a second goal to secure the win. In the 69th minute, Swiderski missed a huge chance on the counterattack after a pass from Chirivella, but his finish lacked accuracy. In the 72nd minute, Djuricic tried a beautiful curling shot that missed narrowly, and at the 76th, Kyriakopoulos fired wide with a diagonal strike. In the 78th, Houtesiotis denied Bakasetas again. The ball ended up in Atromitos’ net in the 90th minute after a corner from Bakasetas, a header from Ingason, and a touch from Jeremejeff, but VAR disallowed it for a foul by Ingason.
