Panathinaikos FC announces the loan signing of Anass Zaroury from the French club Lens, with a purchase option! The 24-year-old Moroccan international left winger becomes the sixth summer addition for the club.
Anass was born on November 7, 2000, in Mechelen, Belgium. The child of Moroccan immigrants, he began playing football at a young age in Mechelen’s academy, then spent two years at the academy of former French footballer Jean-Marc Guillou, and at age 14 joined Zulte Waregem. He fought for a place in the first team of the Belgian club but ultimately made his professional debut at 19 with Lommel, a club acquired by Manchester City’s City Football Group. In January 2021, he was transferred to Charleroi, making the leap to Belgium’s top division.
It took just one “full” season for him to earn a transfer to English side Burnley. In the highly competitive Championship, he had a great season (34 appearances, 7 goals, 6 assists), helping his team to earn promotion to the Premier League and attracting the attention of both Morocco and Belgium national teams. Although he had represented Belgium at all youth levels, he ultimately chose to play for Morocco — even making an appearance at the 2022 World Cup!
During the 2023–24 season, he made six appearances with Burnley in the world’s top league, but in February 2024, he was loaned out to Hull, returning to England’s second division. In the summer of 2024, French club Lens invested in Zaroury and signed him. He went on to make 28 appearances and score 2 goals with the French side.
Anass will wear the number 9 shirt for Panathinaikos.
We welcome Anass to Panathinaikos family!
